Brick Brewery Bastille Weekender

From 13th-15thJuly sees an exciting beer showcase at our Taproom in Peckham. Trudie, our Taproom manager we are sure many of you have become friendly with as a familiar face behind the bar, has worked hard to source some amazing beer from France and is a beer scene that is close to her heart! In her own words, find out more about what we will be pouring throughout the weekend and look forward to seeing you enjoy the beers.

“The French craft beer scene was a late starter in comparison to others. In 2007 France had no more than 200 breweries compared to around 700 in the UK, but when it exploded it followed the same pattern – it jumped astronomically to over 1000 in under 10 years. Having lived in France for two years from 2013 to 2015, I got to relive the initial excitement and passions of a fledgling craft beer scene that was already fully establishing itself in the UK and London. I experienced their first official Paris Beer Week and enjoyed making my pilgrimages to the very few shops and bars at the time in search of the newest breweries riding the craft wave.

Now in 2018 we see a lot of these breweries have built on the initial hype and emerge as interesting, high quality and consistent brands, but, yet, have not managed the journey over the pond. We have managed to source a small selection of the best of France.”

Pouring at the weekend we will see:

Mont Saleve

Located in Neydens, South-East France, since 2010 and founded by a former chemist who has a strong passion for hops, from French Barbe Rouge through to Nelson Sauvin from New Zealand and the now classic hops such as Cascade and Chinook the brewery has expanded its range to around 50 different beers. Mont Salève represent one of the most innovative and active breweries in the French craft beer scene.

Popihn

Heavily regarded as one of France’s most exciting modern craft breweries, Popihn brew an acclaimed selection of beers from American-inspired pales to rich imperial stouts which have helped them grow a reputation for changing the perception of French beer across the world and become a highly-requested import.

La Debauche

La Débauche is a young, dynamic brewery which opened in 2013, the La Débauche team undertakes truly filigree work when it comes to barrel aging, using different types to develop aromas and work with powerful and unique aromatic notes. In amongst this they have gained notoriety in France through a crowdfunding campaign which was still an unusual undertaking in France at the time.

Grand Paris

Gypsy brewers since 2011 and moving into their own brewery on the outskirts of Paris in 2017, The success of Les Brasseurs du Grand Paris is linked to their meticulous work ethic and the quality of their American-influenced beers. They use only very aromatic American and New Zealand hops. Unlike most other breweries in France, Grand Paris has worked closely with the cocktail world, collaborating with renowned bars across France.

Azimut

This Bordeaux based brewery create adventurous and surprising, yet accessible recipes, with both core beers and an exploration range, with their main aim being “Our goal is to craft beers that are simple, original, accessible and surprising. We conceive and develop all our beers so that they can be drunk in pints by themselves or with a meal”.

Intoart Mural

Some of you might remember back in November 2017 when we announced our Taproom renovations, that one of our main objectives was to create and provide a dedicated exhibition space to support local artists and creatives. We strive to work with local creatives at any opportunity, regularly demonstrated through working with local artists to create can labels for our Sour Series and other special beers. We wanted to take this even further and create a space that will support local artists in being able to exhibit their work for our customers to enjoy.

That’s why we are so excited to announce a long-term collaboration with Intoart providing exhibition space for their many fantastic artists. Intoart is an art and design studio based in Peckham working inclusively with people with learning disabilities. Its vision is for people with learning disabilities to be visible, equal and established artists.

The dedicated wall space will provide Intoart with an opportunity to create murals directly onto our white wall and fill the canvas with their creations. The first artists to fill the space was designed and created by Yoshiko Phillips and Andre Williams, working together in a collaborative project.

Yoshiko Phillips’ works are inspired by traditional Japanese embroidery, textiles and Baroque architecture. Often referencing animals, mythical creatures and beasts, these majestically coloured and enigmatic compositions employ bold confident line-work reminiscent of ancient calligraphy.

Andre Williams’ work focuses on meticulously rendered illustrations often alongside striking typography. In the past his illustrations have depicted collections of robots, classical sculptures and ritual masks. He has also applied his graphic drawing style and striking use of colour to hand screen-printed textiles and painted woodcut reliefs.

We are thrilled to welcome Intoart into the Taproom and invite you to come down and view the fantastic artwork!

Let’s Celebrate our 223rd brew!

4

Peckham Pils has been with us since we started in 2013 and continues to be our flagship beer.  We were one of the first London micro breweries to produce this style.  We now produce 10 times the beer we started out making and so we thought sod it, let’s celebrate.  So behold our commemorative 223rd brew in a special limited edition shrink wrapped, 500ml can.

Designed by local artist and graphic designer, Iris Loi, through a collaboration with Peckham Platform, a creative and educational charity based in Peckham, it ensured that we supported and celebrated our local community, who are incredibly important to Brick, plus got a gorgeous design to boot.

Why 223rd?  Well by the time we thought of the idea we had already bypassed 200 and we simply couldn’t wait to 250!

Available on Saturday 11th March 2017 exclusively at the Tap Room and from 4pm at our good friends Hop Burns and Black alongside myself of course for a tasting, and then from selected bottle shops, bars, restaurants from Monday 13th March 2017.  You can also join us on Friday 17th March for a tasting session with one of our brewers at Salthouse Bottles in Brockley, London.

Also, check out the amazing stuff happening at Peckham Platform

and our fabulous graphic designer Iris Loi

Hope you enjoy it!

Our Brewery Tours

a behind the scenes look at creating the beer at Brick Brewery

brewery-tour-in-london-peckham

We are all very passionate about the art and craft of producing consistent top quality beers. Our range is pretty diverse and we continue to experiment on small batches available only at the taproom. All the brewery members, including bar staff, are trained in how the beer is produced and what gives each its unique flavour and characteristic.

Each employee can walk a customer through a tasting journey but we also offer in-depth brewery tours and tasting sessions. Here you will get a chance to see how its all made and end with an informed tasting session highlighting the complexity of each of Brick’s beers.

Inside the Brewery

brewery equipment pressure value

micro brewery equipment tank

Located in a railway arch just behind Peckham Rye station we have managed to pack in a pretty sizeable microbrewery operation. Tanks have been custom made to fit snuggly side by side maximizing every available square foot. We have also gone skyward, building a mezzanine floor to store the grain and hops. We can eek out about 1,100 litres on our 5bbl brewhouse which means we have to brew three times to fill our newest 3,000 litre fermenters. In all we have nine fermentation tanks; two originals at 900 litres (they look so sweet), three tanks at 2,500 litres and four tanks at 3,000 litres. All in all we have room for 21,300 litres or 37,483 pints at one time. Each brew takes up to five hours, with some days brewing twice.

The beer is held in tank for up to four weeks to allow the yeast to convert the sugars to alcohol and carbon-dioxide and help improve flavour and aroma – you just can’t rush it! We lager our Peckham Pils for a further two weeks to make it crisp and clean.

We never use finings in our beers, so our beers are naturally hazy and packed full of flavor.

It’s hard physical labour but we have a team of dedicated brewers who get their heads down and crack on. If you’d like to see first hand the process, why not come down and muck in. We always welcome an extra pair of hands cleaning casks or raking out the mash.
